Time Magazine has named singer Olivia Rodrigo as its Entertainer of the Year. This year, the longest and most useful list happened to be a pop star with Dominican roots. The list included white actresses, male celebrities and several others.
This is not because of anything other than it was the most voted for. For wide-ranging categories like this, it does not make sense to consider specific individuals — choosing whoever scores the most points — so that neither “Olivia Rodriquez” nor some other individual celebrity comes out on top just because each received thousands of votes for items like “Best Movie Actress” or “Best Female Singer.”
Entertainer of the Year 2021
Olivia Rodrigo has been awarded Time Magazine’s title of Entertainer of the Year for 2021. It is quite a feat, as there is fierce competition in the form of Pop Divas, Reality TV personalities and Movie Stars. Time Magazine believes that Rodrigo has achieved so much success because of her ability to blend classic music with modern pop sensibilities.
“In the past year, she has released a hit single, toured the world and become a viral video phenomenon,” Time said of Rodrigo. “She proved herself to be a precocious talent who could command the stage with her voice, her wit and her charm.”
Rodrigo was recognized for having started out on YouTube, posting videos of herself singing songs by famous artists like Britney Spears, Jessie J, Maroon 5 and Flo Rida. Her version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” has garnered more than 15 million views on YouTube.
“Her success is an encouraging reminder that there are still places where the dream of fame can come true,” Time noted.
The magazine also made it a point to remind its readers that Rodrigo, despite being catapulted to tremendous worldwide stardom in less than a year, was only 18-years old and just beginning her life.
